We frequently ignore the hardest working appliance in our homes: the washing machine. We drop in load after load with hardly a thought about the ongoing performance of this much-needed appliance. As a modern necessity, we can't afford for this machine to go down. Without maintenance, the risk of breakdowns, repairs, and replacement hovers like a cloud over each load just waiting for the worst moment to go on strike. However, with regular maintenance, you'll keep your machine humming along and extend the lifespan of this lifesaving machine.
Leave the door open on top-load machines, and slightly ajar on front load machines. Some front load machines have a built-in tab on the door to get just the right amount. This helps the machine dry out after use and keep mold growth from forming. There are some GE front load models which actually use a fan to dry out the rubber gasket, so be sure and follow manufacturer's recommendations on whether it is best to leave it open, cracked open, or closed.
Your filter is designed to stop lint and small objects from damaging your machine's internal components. Chances are your front load machine has a "coin collector" at the bottom front of the machine which needs to be emptied every 1-3 months depending on how much use the machine gets.
Your detergent dispenser can build up residue and actually clog dispensing hoses. Left unchecked, this residue becomes a lovely home for mold. Use warm water and a brush or rag to wipe off the residue, pulling out the dispensers and looking behind them to ensure nothing is built up.
Front-load washing machines have the rubber seal around the door which can trap some seriously disgusting dirt and gunk. Slightly pull back the seal to wipe out the buildup and debris collected there. Inspect the seal for cuts, tears, or holes. Keep your doggies away from front load machines as they love to chew on that rubber ring. It's always best to simply wipe the rubber seal out after each use to keep the dirt away. Every month or two use a mix of water and white vinegar to help kill any potential mold growth.
This is one item you do not want to miss, since ruptured hoses can be quite disastrous. Water supply hoses can dry and crack over time, potentially causing leaks or bursts. Nobody wants to file a super-expensive home insurance claim because of ruptured hoses as ruined floors can cost thousands of dollars to replace. If you see rust, cracks, bulges, tears, or dampness, replace the hoses immediately. Every 3 years, replace the hoses even if they look ok just as a preventative measure.
Sure your machine has a huge capacity, but don't be tempted to stuff it to the top with laundry. Overloading strains your washing machine and cause early wear. Stuffing your machine actually keeps it from working well since your machine relies on the water being able to move around your clothing so it can clean. Different makes and models all have recommended load capacity, so be sure to refer to your owner's manual.
Believe it or not, different machines need different type of soap. Some machines use only HE (high efficiency) soap. Additionally, excessive detergent can actually be counter productive and lead to residue buildup and potential damage. Use only recommended amounts based on load sizes, water hardness, and machine type.
Use a cleaning cycle and a cleaning product such as Affresh! to regularly clean your washing machine drum. Your machine possibly has a cleaning cycle. If not, run an empty load with hot water plus one cup of white vinegar. Your machine has an inner and and outer drum. You will be able to easily see residue buildup on the inner drum, but you can't see the crud on the outer drum. Regular cleaning cycles should help eliminate any buildup.
Cleaning and maintenance of your washing machine helps your machine's lifespan and reliability. Regular maintenance means you'll be able to keep using your machine, potentially well past what you expect modern washing machines.
